His father died before he was born and his mother died when was only six years old. His grandfather took care of him for two years and his grandfather died when he was only eight years old. He then went into guardianship of his uncle, who was a trader at that time. As he grew, he started accompanying his uncle on trading journeys to gain experience in commercial trade. He then became a trader and was called Al-Amin (faithful and trustworthy) because of his upright behaviour. His reputation attracted the proposal from Khadijah (a rich businesswomen of that time) and he consented to the marriage. He was 25 and she was 40 years old at that time.
In year 610 while he was at a cave on Mount Hira he received revelation from God (Allah) for the first time and angle Gabriel commanded him to recite the following verses;

                 Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
                            Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
                            Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
                            He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
                           Taught man that which he knew not.
                    —Qur'an, sura 96 (Al-Alaq), ayat 1-5
